Words are one of the most powerful things we have as human beings. We can use them to build up or tear down. They are the way we communicate to one another; they are a part of nearly everything we do. How we utilize our words can make or break our lives. That is why it is so vital to have God’s Word flowing through our heart regularly, for the purpose of training it. As Joshua 1:8 conveys; we must have it in our mouth, mind and actions. This is accomplished by constantly filling ourselves with it; reading it, speaking it, praying it.
Notice in the sequence of this scripture it begins with our mouth, leading to our mind and playing out in our actions. You cannot act on something your mind has not thought about, and your mind can be mastered by words. The words we listen to or speak on a regular basis can have a great influence on our thoughts, which ultimately will affect what you believe.
It is very important for us to realize the power our words have as believers! There are many times that we as believers have the opportunity to speak into the lives of others that are broken, in need and looking for an answer – often times without knowing it!
We are salt and light, as it says in Matthew 5. Those two agents listed in this scripture are used for preservation and understanding. As followers of Jesus, we should be preserving life and making known the understanding of God’s Word wherever we go. This is accomplished through our words!
One of the most vital ways we can use our words is as seed in the hearts and lives of people we come in contact with. Words are the primary instrument in spreading the Gospel. It was said once by Francis Assisi, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words.” Although I respect the thought behind this quote - that we ought to live out a godly example through our everyday actions and be an example to all as the book of James tells us. We should never underestimate the power of our words! God gave us a mouth to release His Word to this earth. He sent us out to preach the good news to set the captives free. What is good news to a blind man? He can see! What is good news to a poor man? He is no longer poor! What is good news to a lost man? He can be found! But how would the blind, the poor and the lost find truth if it were not presented to them? The Word states this in Romans 10, “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” This scripture, along with II Timothy 4:2, “Preach the Word! Be ready in season, and out of season…” is a mandate to everyone who believes. God wants you to use your words to expand His Kingdom and release His will on earth. Our words ought to be filled with love and carriers of faith and blessing.
Words are how God created this world and everything in it. We are made in His image and likeness and we realize that it was by the Word of His mouth that things were created. When He spoke things came into being, and we realize that we have that same ability to speak to things of this natural world. That is why the Word says in Mark 11:22, “Have faith in God. For assuredly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘be removed and cast down into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says,” Things that were created by words, will respond to words. We see this again in Matthew 21 when Jesus spoke to the fig tree – He cursed it saying, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again!” the byproduct being that the tree instantly withered! He was showing us that created things respond to the source material they originated from. What we say matters! The power God gave us to effect and cause change with our words is unparalleled! Proverbs 18 tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue. When we begin to grab hold of this understanding, and start the practice of filling our words with faith – our lives become so much more hazardous to the kingdom of darkness.
Consider this scripture; Matthew 12:36, “…every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.“
In the original language, “idle word” represents words that shun the labour which they ought to perform. The labor our words are meant to perform is to release God’s will on this earth through our earthen vessels by the use of our voice! Idle words spoken can produce death and are not built by the premise of what God intended them to be used for.
Having this knowledge, if we use our words idly, or with the intention of not obeying the Spirit, we will give an account of that. The only words with power behind them are the words you believe! As it says in Romans 10:10, with the heart we believe and with the mouth confession is made. That is why our belief system must line up with the written Word of God, so when we pray or speak in faith it is built on the right foundation. It is also true that if you believe something negative in your heart and give voice to it you are empowering that thing to come into being. The Word teaches us in Proverb 10:21, “The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom.” We are to feed many by our lips through speaking words of life from the heart filled with the abundance of truth that comes from meditating and dwelling on His Words!
We are the righteousness of Christ, as it says in II Corinthians 5:21. Don’t use your words for something other than what they are purposed for by God. Instead, allow yourself to abide in Him and His Words to abide you as it says in John 15, and look for a way to use your words to glorify God in your life and the life your hearers.
